Notes:
Compared side-by-side with its non-oaked brother, Old Heathen.
Appearance is exactly the same.
Oak/vanilla dominates the smell. I suspect it’s over-oaked, for my tastes.
Yes, it is. Tons of vanilla. Where’s the roast? Is it a stout underneath? You can barely tell. Sigh.
Mouthfeel usually suffers in the barrel. It’s true here, but not bad.
Overall, I’d skip this one. Even this 12oz bottle may be hard to finish.

Notes:
The pour isn’t too impressive. An average-to-thin body, a small head that dies quickly and leaves just a bit of lacing. The body is black, with cola brown on the edges. Meh.
The smell is nice. Clearly going to be on the dry, roasty end of stouts. Fairly hoppy.
OK, this bottle seems to be old. The taste is muted and blurred. No big roasty punch. I’m sure I bought this fairly recently, so perhaps it sat in the store a long time. Sigh.
Mouthfeel is fine. I certainly would love it to be thicker, but it’s not thin by any measure.
Overall a disappointment. All modesty aside, I can brew better.

Notes:
This is a great beer if sipped slowly. Unfortunately, if you drink it fast, palate fatigue covers up the great flavors, and some less desirable flavors dominate. Not exactly off flavors, just sort of weak flavors. Hard to describe.
Anyway, I’m being a bit harsh on myself; this is a good beer.
(Note: I am changing its name from Over the River to Crime Scene.)
